"A first essential setting for learning hope is prayer. St Augustine defines prayer as an exercise of desire, a straining forward to the things that are to come. This is a process of enlargement and preparation of the human heart. When we pray properly we undergo an inner purification, we learn to purify our desires and our hopes. This power of purification comes from an encounter between my intimate self and God. Thus we may become open to God and open to our fellow human beings. Hope in a Christian sense is always hope for others as well."
